How to install Megacubo on Windows 11 and Windows 10
It takes five steps, and the first detail that surprises people is the file size: about 3 MB. It is not the full application, it is a downloader — it fetches Megacubo during installation and stays responsible for updates afterwards. That is why the Windows download comes from the official site, and not from the GitHub releases.
Requirements, package formats and what changes on Windows are on the platform page; here the subject is the installation itself.
Step by step
- Open the official site — megacubo.tv, the project's domain.
- Download the installer for your architecture — there are files for x64, x86 and ARM64. If you are unsure,
Settings → System → Aboutsays which one you have. - Run the installer and follow the screens — if you want to carry the application on a USB drive, choose portable mode at this step.
- Follow the first-run wizard — interface language, a performance suggestion based on the device's memory and the request for the first playlist.
- Add your playlist and test a channel — the playlist is always yours or the community's; without it the application has nothing to play.
Steps checked on 2026-09-25 in the project's documentation (Installation). Official installer: megacubo.tv/bin/megacubo_setup.exe.
Two side paths worth knowing
Portable mode
Runs from a USB drive or an external disk, with nothing installed on the system. It is an option in the installer; on a version already installed, just create the www/nodejs/.portable/ folder inside the application folder and restart
Keeping your configuration
The application exports playlists and settings into a ZIP file with the config.json (export and import menu), and imports that same file back. Useful before moving to another machine
Updating
Download the new version from the official site and install it over the old one: playlists and settings are kept. The application also tends to tell you when a new version is out, and the release notes show what changed in each publication — with the install notes per platform.
What usually goes wrong
- The antivirus flags the installer — that is typical behaviour for a downloader; add the application folder to the exceptions, allow the
megacubo.tvdomain and restart the application - The installation fails halfway — run the installer as administrator, or temporarily turn off background security tools
- The application does not open after installing — try reinstalling, or use portable mode, which does not depend on the installation
- The architecture is wrong — on ARM64 the x64 installer installs, but runs under emulation and is slower
Frequently asked questions
Why is the Windows installer only about 3 MB?
Because it is a downloader: the small file fetches the complete application during installation, and it is also what stays responsible for telling you about updates. That is why the Windows download comes from the official site, and not from the GitHub releases.
Does installing over the old version lose my playlists?
No. Installing the new version over the old one keeps playlists and settings. If you would rather keep a copy, the application exports the whole configuration into a ZIP file with the config.json, in the export and import menu.
My antivirus blocked the installation. Is it a virus?
No. Applications that download other files during installation, like this one, are frequently flagged as suspicious by antivirus software. The project advises adding the application folder to the antivirus exceptions and allowing the megacubo.tv domain, and the installation goes through after that.
